Younger Than When She Was Young

I was just flipping through this week's issue of New York Magazine - you know the one with the American Gothic-looking family on the cover, when I turned to my favorite guilty pleasure- the page that features this week's most celeb-and-politco-saturated events- none of which have I ever been invited to mind you, when a photo of the ever-lovely Julie Newmar caught my eye. Now I don't claim to know her "real" age or even the date she was born, but I can tell you that in this particular shot she looks so well preserved, I venture to say that she looks younger now than when she was young - hoever many years ago. How can anyone, Newmar or not, manage to pull of this modern-day phenom? Well only her plastic surgeon, hair colorist, cosmetic dentist, personal trainer, dermatologist, makeup artist and nutritionist know for sure, but the end result, I find, is quite astounding. Either the woman is blessed with genes that are effected by some rare form of Dorian Grey syndrome or she has assembled the best maintenance team this side of the hill. Hooray for Julie and everyone like her who seems to have discovered the fountain of youth and is still partying like it's 2009!

A: Try a bookstore under fiction

Q: How can you increase the heart rate of your 50+ year old husband?
A: Tell him you're pregnant.

Q: How can you avoid spotting a wrinkle every time you walk by a mirror?
A: The next time you're in front of a mirror, take off your glasses.

Q: Why should 50+ year old people use valet parking?
A: Valets don't forget where they park your car.

Q: Is it common for 50+ year olds to have problems with short term memory storage?
A: Storing memory is not a problem, retrieving it is a problem.

Q: As people age, do they sleep more soundly?
A: Yes, but usually in the afternoon.

Q: Where do 50+ year olds look for fashionable glasses?
A: Their foreheads.

Q: What is the most common remark made by 50 year olds when they enter antique stores?
A: "I remember these".

Talkin 'Bout My Gen-eration!

Who among us will ever forget the day that unwelcome "welcome to AARP" letter arrives in the mail? Talk about rubbing your face in it! At first, I just laughed it off and pretended it was some type of ridiculous mistake. All those pictures of white-haired, smiling couples knocking golf balls around their retirement communities. My hair's not white! (Thanks to Miss Clairol). I'm not ready to retire (if only) and even if I did, it certainly would not be so I could practice my swing with a bunch of alta cokkas! Not me - I'm no way near there, but when I am, you bet I'll be living it up my way. Zipping around the Italian countryside on my Vespa, writing my memoirs while flirting with the locals in Italian. Maybe my novel will become a huge best seller and I'll be busy trotting the globe on book tours with periodic stopovers at Yaddo to renew my spirit. Or maybe my passion for beauty and cosmetics will result in a new way for me and my aging peers to really prolong our youthful looks and vitality. I can think of a million scenarios - fantasy and fantastic - but none of them have anything to do with golf. No - not us! Talkin 'bout my gen-eration!

A Chick's Guide to Turning 60

Yesterday I was bemoaning the fact that I'll soon be facing another "big 0" birthday and this time it's not the first scary one - 30. In fact it's double that! How the hell did that happen? Where did the time go? Or better still, where did my life go? Then this thought made me feel a whole lot better. So what if I'm facing 60? So is everyone else! It's true - except for a few of my friends - one of which is about to deal with her first scary one on Saturday night (Happy Birthday Max!) We'll maybe that's what keeps me young. Which reminds me: Marjorie's tip for the day: If you want to feel young, start hanging out with older people! Believe me, it works. I just got back from visiting my mother in Ft. Lauderdale and I feel like a kosher spring chicken. Later! Marjorie

Boomer Beauty - It's all maintenance now!

Boomer Beauty - is there really such as thing? Of course. It's viewing yourself in a balanced, realistic light brightened by a healthy dose of humor and acceptance of who you are and still can be. Fortunately for us boomers, our expectation of looking younger, living longer and staying healthier has fueled extraordinary developments in skincare technology, cosmetic formulations, nutrition, fitness techniques, cosmetic procedures and other youth-defying triumphs created specifically for us! This week I interviewed some of New York's top plastic surgeons and dermatologists on the subject of "preparing your skin for a facial cosmetic procedure" for an upcoming issue of Healthy Aging Magazine. Information I have in my notes that doesn't appear in the article will soon be posted here for you alone. When my son, Alexander, was 6 he caught me staring in the mirror pulling back the skin around my chin to see how it looked a few, firmer years ago. I Can't Believe I'm In My 50's

Hello boomers! I'm Marjorie and I'm one of you. Shocking as it is to me, I find myself in midlife but still feel like a kid! Throughout my life, I've worked almost exclusively in the beauty industry and everyday I talk to beauty editors, makeup artists, hair stylists, estheticians, fashion experts, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, personal trainers, nutritionists and many other specialists dedicated to helping people like you and me look as young as we feel. I've also taken a hard look at myself - both inside and out – as I learn to adjust and accept the changes happening within me, without me. What I've come to realize is that, as boomers, we are a unique group - with values both modern and shaped by the experiences of our lifetimes. Our concept of beauty is universal, yet molded by the changing ideals we've witnessed from generation to generation. Now we want to look and feel as good as possible and that makes us among the most heavily advertised and promoted to segments of the population. Through personal experience and strictly "off the record" conversations with the respected experts and professionals, I've gained extraordinary insights into the truths and half truths about what works in beauty and healthy lifestyles for us today.
